Purple Heart awarded to SGT “Doc” Wilson under new Army guidelines for traumatic brain injuries
On July 5th, SGT Samuel “Doc” Wilson III was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Iraq in 2005.
On July 5th, SGT Samuel “Doc” Wilson III was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Iraq in 2005. The presentation was made by COL McGuire who was his Battalion Commander in Afghanistan. The ceremony was conducted at the Fredericksburg National Guard Armory with his family, friends and fellow veterans in attendance. Staff members of the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program were instrumental in assisting SGT Wilson obtain the award. Ben Shaw served two tours in Iraq as an infantry Marine, conducting hundreds of missions in the "Sunni Triangle," and then a third tour as a foreign weapons instructor under Multi-National Forces West - Advanced Infantry Training Center. He is a combat veteran. Following his discharge in 2007, Shaw returned to Virginia and continued his education. In 2009, he began blogging short stories documenting veteran and combat experiences, and later returned to Iraq as a civilian combat journalist embedded with US Soldiers in the northern provinces. In early 2010, Shaw embedded with US troops in Logar province, Afghanistan, serving as a military and veteran advocate and combat photographer and videographer.
Shaw is currently a Veteran Peer Specialist with the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program in Charlottesville, Virginia..
