Purple heart awarded for traumatic brain injury
On July 5, 2011, S. Vaughan Wilson III, was awarded his purple heart for a traumatic brain injury received in 2005 while serving with 173rd Airborne in Afghanistan. As more is learned about traumatic brain injuries and how they can severely injure a servicemember, the United States Army has adopted modified criteria for purple heart qualifications.
Support group just for Women
In an ongoing effort to expand its offerings in Frederickburg, the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program has started a support group just for women.

Ben Shaw served two tours in Iraq as an infantry Marine, conducting hundreds of missions in the "Sunni Triangle," and then a third tour as a foreign weapons instructor under Multi-National Forces West - Advanced Infantry Training Center. He is a combat veteran. Following his discharge in 2007, Shaw returned to Virginia and continued his education. In 2009, he began blogging short stories documenting veteran and combat experiences, and later returned to Iraq as a civilian combat journalist embedded with US Soldiers in the northern provinces. In early 2010, Shaw embedded with US troops in Logar province, Afghanistan, serving as a military and veteran advocate and combat photographer and videographer.
Shaw is currently a Veteran Peer Specialist with the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program in Charlottesville, Virginia..
