Virginia Veterans Corps Service

The Virginia Veterans Corps (VVC)-an AmeriCorps program was first established in 2011 to assist the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) in carrying out its mission of assisting Virginia Veterans dealing with stress related disorders and traumatic brain injuries and helping them connect to resources in the community. Since its inception the Virginia Veterans Corps has directly impacted the lives of individuals from the military community by directing them to resources to address the following needs: 

• Mental and Physical Health Treatment
• Housing
• Employment
• Financial Counseling and Assistance
• Registering veterans for military related benefits

Currently, the program has 22 members who are called Navigators and who serve at 10 service sites throughout Hampton Roads assisting military personnel and their families these sites include: 

• Hampton-Newport News CSB
• Middle Peninsula CSB
• Operation Homefront’s Annual Back to School and Holiday Toy Drives
• United Way of Williamsburg Community Resource Center
• Goodwill Employment
• Armed Service YMCA
• Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society
• USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia
• Old Dominion University Military Connection Center
• Lincoln Military Housing
• Regent University Office of Military and Veteran’s Affairs
• Richmond Behavioral Health (CSB)
• The Freedom Support Center (Petersburg)
• Virginia Supportive Housing (Richmond)

 

The Virginia Veterans Corps program year runs from September-July and Navigators who are part-time are responsible for completing 900 hours of service. During their service term, Navigators serve at their individual site, assisting veterans and active duty service families with a variety of needs which include assistance with childcare, employment, emergency financial assistance, and access to community resources which will meet their individual needs. In addition to their commitment to the efforts at their individual sites, the Navigators participate at a number of community outreach events and participate in 4 service projects as an AmeriCorps Team. In the past some of these events have included:

• Peninsula Town Center Celebration of the Military Child Festival
• Community Resource Fairs
• Veterans Coffee Hours
• Armed Services YMCA Father-Daughter Military Ball
• FoodBank of Southeastern Virginia and Easter Shore Special MLK Day Event
• Tidewater Military Family Services Council Fall Festival
